My Teaching Philosophy...
I have always wanted to become a teacher from a very young age because I love making a difference in the lives of others and have always enjoyed being around, helping and spending time with children.
Throughout my teaching degree in the past 4 years and through a variety of placements in different schools, PD's, meetings and lectures that I have attended, I have not only developed as a teacher but as an individually as well.
Theories put forward and different types of teaching practices have enabled me to reflect on what I will use in future practices and assisted me in developing my set of beliefs, values and philosophy of teaching.

In developing my philosophy...
I believe that it is extremely important to continuously consider the following:
* Referring to and continuously developing personal and professional knowledge and familiarity with the curriculum
* Have a set of values, beliefs and be a caring, encouraging, positive role model/inspiration to students
* Ability to effectively establish a positive relationship with all students, staff, parents, and the community as well as communicate, support and interact successfully with them.
* Work as a team (with other teaching staff, planning opportunities (PLT), cluster meetings etc.)
* Ensure students are engaged, motivated, ready to learn and given opportunities to succeed
* Engage in regular, organised and effective planning, reflection and improvement during teaching and learning
* Be flexible, meet the needs of students and manage the class effectively by having a management plan in place
* Create and maintain a warm, positive, colourful, respectful, and inclusive learning environment
* Accept constructive feedback from others, make any necessary needed changes to improve my teaching
* Utilise and engage in a variety of assessment and reporting methods and give students feedback
*Allow for a number of different learning opportunities
* Set short and long term goals (eg. SMART goals)
* Maintain and act professionally at all times
* Treat others and be treated with respect
* Actively listen to others
Theorists that have influenced my philosophy...
* William Glasser - choice theory, assisting students in becoming responsible for their own behaviour, setting rules and determining a successful conflict resolution strategy.
* James Nottingham - challenging learning & allowing children to wobble
* Vygostky - ZPD & sociocultural theory
* Gardner - Multiple intelligences - being aware of them and being able to modify teaching in order to successfully cater for different learning styles
* Rogers - Guiding students towards building self control and personal accountability for their behavioral choices

As a developing teacher, I have been able to develop a philosophy, however I hope to add more as I enter the profession.
I believe that I am a very approachable, trustworthy, responsible, patient and an honest person who loves to try new things, be the best I can be and make a positive difference in the lives of others. Seeing children learn, putting passion into their work and succeed, for me is one of the greatest feelings, and teaching is such a rewarding profession that I love and enjoy putting passion, hard work and efforts into being the best teacher I can be. |
